Encarta, Microsoft’s popular encyclopedia will be discontinuing later this year. Microsoft has made this announcement confirmating that Wikipedia is the world’s definitive reference guide.

Microsoft has said “Encarta has been a popular product around the world for many years. However, the category of traditional encyclopedias and reference material has changed. People today seek and consume information in considerably different ways than in years past.”

All editions of Encarta except Encarta Japan are being discontinued as of October 31, 2009. Encarta Japan will be discontinued on December 31, 2009.
