The Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, first unveiled Bing last Thursday at a California technology conference and the early reactions have been very positive. New search engine, that aims to rival Google, will replace Live Search. Live Search maintains just an 8.2% share of the market for core searches.
According to Microsoft, Bing will offer search by catefory, more relevant search results, snapshots of search results’ Web pages, color-coded search results and search tools on the left side of the page.
Microsoft said the Bing service, billed by the company as a Decision Engine, will initially focus on shopping, travel, local business and information, and health-related research areas in which people want more assistance in making key decisions.
The Bing home page shows a picture of hot air balloons flying over a craggy desert landscape in Cappadocia, Turkey. Like Google, the page offers links to specific search categories like news, video, shopping, maps and travel, and also includes a link to Microsoft’s cash-back search rewards programme.
